BioDiesel Bus - In Living Color
Biodiesel Directory: This is the Biodiesel Directory of All Sites Sorted, and is a subsection of the Renewable Energy Online Directory listing renewable energy websites and resources.
Generally speaking, diesel fuel powered cars are more energy-efficient than comparably sized gasoline powered cars. The same is true of biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel refers to a diesel-equivalent of diesel fuel, which is derived from natural sources such as vegetable oils, like ethanol is a vegetable-based gasoline replacement. Usually biodiesel is an alternative to diesel fuel, since unmodified diesel engine cars and trucks can operate on biodiesel. As stated in Wikipedia, biodiesel “refers to alkyl esters made from the transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats.”
Biodiesel has major economic and environmental advantages over traditional diesel fuel. For example, biodiesel is a renewable source of energy, being made from vegetable or animal by-products. In contrast traditional diesel fuel is refined from crude oil, dependent on unstable regions for supply, and supplies are depleted as the oil is pumped out of the ground. Biodiesel also is biodegradable and less or non-toxic, providing pollution reduction, and potential in reduction of unwanted greenhouse emissions. One statistic is that biodiesel generally has 50-60% lower carbon dioxide by-products than petroleum-based diesel, being based on consumption of carbon dioxide by the plants producing the fuel base. Pure biodiesel is available at many gas stations.
